Happy Friday! If you choose to spend the weekend inside observing the “high holiday,” as it were, we wouldn’t blame you—but if you would rather get out and see something on the big screen, there are still a few great new titles opening over the next few days! Whether you prefer highbrow fare, lowbrow laughs, or attempts at combining comedy with social critique, we’ve got you covered. Here’s what’s coming to theaters this weekend:
Super Troopers 2
It’s been seventeen years since the release of the original Super Troopers. Feel old yet? More importantly, do you think the guys from Broken Lizard (aka the comedy troupe behind this as well as Club Dread and Beerfest) feel old yet? Proving that comedy at the expense of Canada literally never goes out of style, the boys are back to make a staunch stand for good-natured raunch. Let’s just say it’s pretty safe to assume they didn’t pick a 4/20 release date arbitrarily, you know? Our cinematic prescription: Watch with your best bros.
Godard, Mon Amour (La redoubtable)
You could also satisfy your intellectual itch this weekend with a biopic based on the memoirs of Jean-Luc Godard’s former partner Anne Wiazemsky. Godard Mon Amour (which we enthusiastically covered in our ongoing Trailer Park series) is about love, art, and politics—and it’s in French. In other words, it’s bound to be divisive in the most delicious way! Warning: May cause sudden cravings for red wine and political agitating.
I Feel Pretty
Amy Schumer’s last onscreen effort (Snatched, with Goldie Hawn) has a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so maybe the key to enjoying I Feel Pretty lies in your expectations themselves. At worst, this will be another Shallow Hal—watch for an article comparing the two films publishing next week, in fact—but at best, while certainly not revolutionary, it could be a heartwarming affirmation of self-love. It’s not a bad omen to see Sasheer Zamata, Aidy Bryant, and Busy Phillips in supporting roles, either. Can I Feel Pretty get out of its own way by avoiding cheap and fat-phobic jabs? Only one way to find out.
