Manoel de Oliveira’s Angelic Cinema

STRANGE CASE OF ANGELICA

‘The Strange Case of Angelica’

In memory of Manoel de Oliveira, the ageless director who finally left us last week at age 106, here’s a video essay tribute to one of his great late period achievements. The Strange Case of Angelica, made when Oliveira was a sprightly 102 years old, stands tall as one of this decade’s most hauntingly beautiful works of cinema. This video, adapted from my own original review for Roger Ebert.com, attempts to show how and why.
