“Left-wing Italian filmmaker Giuseppe Bertolucci has died aged 65 after a long illness, his brother and longtime collaborator Bernardo Bertolucci said Saturday.” As the AFP reports, Giuseppe Bertolucci co-wrote Bernardo’s epic 1900 (1976) with his brother, directed Panni Sporchi (Dirty Linen, 1980), “a documentary commissioned by the Italian Communist Party,” and Berlinguer Ti Voglio Bene (Berlinguer I Love You, 1977), “a homage to Italian communist reformer Enrico Berlinguer,” which he co-wrote with the film’s star, Roberto Benigni.
Cineuropa runs a statement from Benigni, with whom Bertolucci also collaborated on such films as Effetti Personali (1983) and Tuttobenigni (1983). “I owe everything to Giuseppe Bertolucci. He was my first friend, my first director, my first author. He was the one to teach me how to read poetry, to move, to walk in this world, to look at the sky, to understand where beauty comes from and to recognize it. And boldness and bravery.”
