REFLECTIONS ON FILM CULTURE

Filmwax Radio Introduces FIXshorts Filmmakers

SEA TO SHINING SEA

‘Sea to Shining Sea’

[Editor’s note: Fandor has initiated an innovative collaborative project with a group of five FIX filmmakers to create original films under the ‘FIXshorts’ banner. From over thirty submitted script-and-budget proposals, Fandor chose five diverse and dynamic short film projects to help develop from start (funding) to finish (distribution and promotion). Today, we begin a series of interviews with FIXshorts filmmakers which we imagine might provoke even more questions than answers—as we hope you’ll explore their work further on their Kickstarter campaign pages.]

When I heard that Fandor was getting into the content-creation game, I was happy for the opportunity to try something a little different with the podcast. With the help of the company’s partner relations manager, Amanda Salazar, I was able to coordinate with all five of the FIXshorts filmmakers and get them on the phone. They were spread out all over the place. I spoke with Lori Felker in Ann Arbor, David Schendel in San Francisco, Ben Russell in Miami (just having gotten back from a prolonged trip to the Surinamese jungle deep in the Amazon. Ben was back in the States for only minutes before we talked. Maximon Monihan and Maya Erdelyi, the remaining two filmmakers, were here in the New York City areas. Their disparate geographies (they all travel for their filmmaking); shows in their work. All five filmmakers reflect hugely different styles of filmmaking. But all have a such a lust for filmmaking and imaginative power that they guarantee artful filmmaking is still alive and well. And racking up the air miles.
