REFLECTIONS ON FILM CULTURE

DAILY | Trailer #2 for Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER

The first trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, released last month, was riveting, even as it confined its focus to some sort of enigmatic interrogation of an unnamed character played by Joaquin Phoenix. This new trailer opens up a bit and features Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams.

Tony Ortega, editor in chief of the Village Voice, has been writing about Scientology for nearly 20 years now: “With this second trailer, I think we can conclude two things. First, there is no question that L. Ron Hubbard and the early days of Dianetics/Scientology is the raw material that Anderson is drawing from. But I think it’s also pretty plain that this is not intended to be a history of Hubbard and his invention. The filmmaker is riffing on LRH for a fictional film, not creating a biopic.”
