Jean-Claude Brisseau in Locarno

The Jury for the Concorso international (International Competition) for the 65th Festival del film Locarno, led by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (the other members: Hans Ulrich Obrist, Im Sang-soo, Noémie Lvovksy, and Roger Avary), has awarded the Golden Leopard to Jean-Claude Brisseau’s The Girl from Nowhere, a film dismissed by Screen‘s Dan Fainaru as “almost a parody throwback to the old days of the French New Wave and its more philosophical meanderings…. Brisseau, once earmarked as one of the most promising new talents after his Sound and Fury played in Cannes 1988, obviously sees this as a very personal statement requiring his own presence in the lead.”

On the other hand, just yesterday, the Hollywood Reporter‘s Eric J. Lyman asked artistic director Olivier Père, “Are there any films that have surprised you by the reaction they received?” Père: “There’s one film in competition that I really loved, but that I was nervous about how it would be received. It was made with a very small budget, and I felt it was a risky decision that could have been seen as ridiculous. But instead people have said they loved it. I am talking about La Fille de nulle part (The Girl From Nowhere). I would say that film has been my biggest surprise.”

You’ll find all our coverage of the coverage of this year’s edition here, and we can expect updates over the next few days at least. Meantime, the full list of awards.
