Hooman and Chris sit down with the Senior Programmer at Slamdance, Ben Umstead.

Ben Umstead is a non-binary filmmaker and senior programmer at the Slamdance Film Festival, where they participate in building the fest’s First Time Narrative Features Competiton and the Breakouts section. As a creative development specialist, script consultant, and filmmaker, Ben works with artists outside the Hollywood norm, striving for new freedom in cinematic storytelling. Their films include the multi-award-winning “Three Fingers”, the parable “Tormenting the Hen”, and dark comedy “Homewrecker”.

In this episode, we discover the origins of the festival and get an inside scoop on how the films that make it through are selected. It works is by a large democratic group process, everyone votes on the films, and typically the films chosen are the best of the best. Listen in for more details!
