The International Jury of Venezia 70, the Competition, presided over by Bernardo Bertolucci (other members: Andrea Arnold, Renato Berta, Carrie Fisher, Martina Gedeck, Jiang Wen, Pablo Larraín, Virginie Ledoyen, and Ryuichi Sakamoto), has awarded the Golden Lion to Gianfranco Rosi’s Sacro GRA. Here‘s what the critics have been saying about the documentary on life along the highway that circles Rome.
Silver Lion for Best Director: Alexandros Avranas for Miss Violence, which has also scored the Volpi Cup for Best Actor: Themis Panou.
“The Grand Jury Prize is a new one in the Venice roster, coming in ahead of the Special Jury Prize in terms of status,” writes Guy Lodge at In Contention, “though I haven’t yet managed to ascertain if it’s meant to be equal to or ahead of the Silver Lion for Best Director. Name aside (in Cannes, it refers to the first runner-up), it seems more like bronze medal of the Competition.”And it goes to Tsai Ming-liang’s Stray Dogs.
Special Jury Prize: Philip Gröning’s The Police Officer’s Wife.
Vopi Cup for Best Actress: Elena Cotta for her performance in Emma Dante’s A Street in Palermo.
Best Screenplay: Philomena, written by Steve Coogan, Jeff Pope, and Martin Sixsmith and directed by Stephen Frears.
Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor/Actress: Tye Sheridan for his performance in David Gordon Green’s Joe.

“In the Venice Days parallel section,” reports Fabien Lemercier at Cineuropa, “the jury put together by the network of Europa Cinemas operators awarded its Label to The Good Life by Jean Denizot.”
“Critics Week has awarded its prize to Zoran, My Nephew the Idiot, a sophisticated comedy by first-time Italo helmer Matteo Oleotto,” reports Variety‘s Nick Vivarelli.
