Even with SXSW (March 7 through 15), San Francisco (April 25 through May 9) and Tribeca (April 16 through 27) happening well before Cannes (May 14 through 25), it’s hard not to be anticipating the lineup of what Fabien Lemercier calls “the world’s biggest festival.” Lemercier, in fact, can’t resist. At Cineuropa, he’s listed dozens and dozens of possible contenders. Among them: Godard‘s Adieu au langage, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner, Hou Hsiao-hsien’s The Assassin, Christian Petzold‘s Phoenix and, again, many, many more.
San Francisco’s festival, one of the world’s oldest, is, of course, run by the San Francisco Film Society, which now has a new executive director. Noah Cowan, a former programmer for Toronto who resigned as founding artistic director of TIFF Bell Lightbox last month, tells Anne Thompson what he’s looking forward to as he makes the transition.
Tribeca, in the meantime, has announced that it’ll be opening with “the world premiere of Time is Illmatic. This documentary follows the trajectory of Nas’ 1994 landmark debut album Illmatic, widely considered one of the most important and revolutionary albums in hip-hop.”
Filmmaker‘s Nick Dawson has the lineup for this year’s True/False Film Fest, running from February 27 through March 2 in Columbia, Missouri.
The inaugural edition of the Rated SR Socially Relevant Film Festival will take place from March 14 through 20 at New York’s Quad Cinema.
NOIR CITY AUSTIN from Alamo Drafthouse.
Vince Keenan has filed dispatches from the Noir City festivals in San Francisco and Seattle, and now the Chronicle‘s Richard Whittaker talks with curator Eddie Muller about bringing the festival to Austin from February 28 through March 2.
The London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival has been rebranded as Flare: London LGBT Film Festival and its 28th edition runs from March 20 through 30.
And finally for now, while it’s not exactly a festival but rather more of an update to yesterday’s big roundup of goings on here and there, Independent of Reality: Jan Nemec Retrospective opens tomorrow at Northwest Film Forum in Seattle and runs through Wednesday.
