Borrowing Time with Wong Kar-wai

Play Video

In a sense, no matter what they’re “about,” all films are about time. Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai, one of the strongest stylists working today, is fascinated with the manipulation of time. This is demonstrated in techniques like step-printing, a technical manipulation that makes the film look like both slow and fast motion. But he doesn’t just investigate cinematic time technically, he also explores it thematically and symbolically. This video shows how Wong Kar-Wai uses various and potent signifiers of the passage of time to create his signature mood and feeling.
