It’s been ten years since the film exploded into cinemas, and people still talk about it as though it’s a new release. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and other comic book films have entered the scene and influenced the genre, but The Dark Knight was a game-changer that influenced cinema as a whole. But how could a comic book movie be this good? How could a movie about grown men dressing up like bats and clowns be considered a masterclass in filmmaking?

Comic book movies come and go, but The Dark Knight is special; it’s more than just a comic book movie. In this video, we take a look at why the film endures, even within an infinitely-expanding genre. The surging MCU has massively altered the perception of what a comic book film should be, and that’s fine. The Dark Knight may no longer be the comic book film we need right now, but it is surely the one we deserve.
