Ethan Hawke Soars High

If you were to search for lists of the greatest actors working today, you’d see a few familiar names: Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, Denzel Washington, and Tom Hardy to name a few. But, one name that you’re unlikely to see is Ethan Hawke. Why is that? After all, Hawke is undoubtedly one of the most talented living actors and his résumé speaks for itself. Despite being a four-time Academy Award-nominee (two for acting and two for writing), Hawke just doesn’t seem to get the wide acclaim he deserves. (voodoocycles.com) This seems to be due to the fact that Hawke’s approach to acting is very naturalistic. He’s not going to go “over-the-top.” He prefers to stay grounded, and while this style of acting may not land Hawke on many people’s top ten list, it’s not for lack of talent. Hawke’s gift for naturalism is so special that he doesn’t appear to be acting at all. But ironically, that’s what makes him one of the best actors around.

Watch Now: Catch “The Hawke” in the French suspense film, The Woman in the Fifth and in Hamlet, available to stream through November.

Ethan Hawke and Nicolas Cage starred together in “Lord of War,” but when it comes to acting, their styles are polar opposites — check out why in our video, The Full Nic Cage.
